A NOTE FROM ZEE DIREKTOR
On first read, this seems like a light little romp through the urban streets
of Dusseldorf. Steve Martin is so adept at using the English Language to make
us giggle and to make us think ...simultaneously. Actually the reason for
doing this play is because of a line that refers to that which is compressed
into the space of an ellipsis is really condensed quality...and I do so love
my ellipsis!
You've come a long way baby!!! Women's rights have increasingly evolved and
expanded in the past 100 years. Recognition of women's identity and the equal
contribution they make to society in every aspect has leaped from what it
was in 1910 Germany. As I read the story I realized how stymied women were
before their emancipation. And men?! Oh how we have evolved...truly as a course
of survival rather than a desire to become civil. We understand...or have
been made to understand the power of women in society. How they wield their
power and how they manage results without severely upsetting the apple cart
is a scientific marvel that we men will probably never comprehend.
In the book Women are from Venus/Men are from Mars, John Gray exposes
the age old issue of how men and women communicate...get along...solve their
problems. In addition to countless anecdotes. Dr. Gray addresses what I believe
is a Universal Truth...men and women are different. They have different ways
of looking at things. And in The Underpants we get to see how men and women
deal with the "relationship dance."
The final Ahaa that I derived from this story is how the tiniest
of incidents can totally change the world. A split second of unconsciousness
and there you are in a car accident. You pick up the phone... "should
I or shouldn't I make that call." You yell at your boss or your wife
and the relationship is changed forever. You tell a secret and you will never
again be able to close that Pandora's Box. Or your underpants fall down in
public to the thrill and excitement of the crowd. One split second and the
world is changed forever.
As my Dad used to say "Thou cans't stir a flower without the troubling
of a star" Or stick your finger in a glass of water... take it out...and
measure the effect your finger ultimately had.
Its as senseless as a Giraffe!!!!
